Man oh man the menopause

If you've hit menopause and suddenly feel like your body has started playing by a completely different set of rules, you're not imagining it. One day you can eat what you've always eaten, and the next it seems like every biscuit, glass of wine, or weekend treat heads straight to your waistline.

So, what's going on?

The biggest culprit is hormones—particularly estrogen. As estrogen levels decline during menopause, your body becomes more likely to store fat around your middle rather than your hips and thighs. Add in a naturally slowing metabolism, a gradual loss of muscle mass, disrupted sleep, and the occasional stress-induced snack attack, and it's easy to see why weight gain becomes more common during this stage of life.

The good news? Menopause doesn't mean weight gain is unavoidable, and it certainly doesn't mean you have to spend the rest of your life living on lettuce leaves.

One of the best things you can do is focus on protein. Foods like fish, eggs, chicken, beans, and Greek yogurt help keep you feeling fuller for longer while supporting muscle mass. Think of muscle as your body's calorie-burning engine—the more you maintain, the better your metabolism works.

Exercise also becomes your best friend. And no, this doesn't mean hours on a treadmill. Strength training a few times a week, combined with walking, swimming, cycling, or dancing around the kitchen while making dinner, can make a real difference. Building muscle helps your body burn more calories, even when you're relaxing on the couch.

Sleep deserves some attention too. Menopause has a sneaky way of disrupting sleep, and poor sleep can increase cravings and make healthy choices much harder. If you're tired, your body naturally reaches for quick energy—usually in the form of sugar and carbs.

And let's not forget stress. Between work, family, aging parents, and the general busyness of life, stress can push the body into storing more abdominal fat. Finding time for a walk, yoga class, coffee with friends, or even ten minutes of quiet can be surprisingly helpful.

Most importantly, be kind to yourself. Menopause is a major life transition, and your body is adapting to significant hormonal changes. The goal isn't perfection—it's feeling strong, healthy, and confident in your own skin.

Remember, menopause may change the rules, but it doesn't mean you can't win the game.
